This stuff … is so addicting. Not sure if you’re aware, but Starbucks sells both the blueberry granola and the gojiberry granola. Anytime I walk into a Starbucks store I buy one of these, even if I already have one in my purse or at home. It’s sort of an obsession. Click on the picture and check out the Two Moms in the Raw website. inspiring, to say the least.
Just remembered I’m going to the beach tomorrow. This is quite exciting as I am going to be spending high-quality and high-quantity time with my very first roommate who I have not been able to spend any sort of time with over the last 3 years. “Looking forward” just doesn’t cut it. I’m ecstatic.
Falling Off the Vegan Wagon
Alright it’s confession time. Today started of sooooo well. This morning I even wrote a list of things i would NOT eat starting now until a TBD later date. After reading up on a bunch of illnesses and food allergies and all kinds of looks-like-im-never-eating-THAT-again kind of articles, I felt ready for my day. Putting on the armor of health, i suppose (or putting on the armor of the KNOWLEDGE of healthy stuff). Well, it wasn’t a couple hours later that I consumed the following …
*Allow me to preface this by saying that most of today was spent roaming around Yorba Linda - 3 of my piano students cancelled on me - all at different times - so I had huge gaps of time to fill, hence the mania.*
Exhibit A: Frozen Yogurt (complete with cookie dough pieces, cheesecake bites, graham cracker crumbles). I had cookies & cream, cake batter, AND georgia peach all in one cup with the previously mentioned toppings. My reason for this exorbitant display of gluttony? I had to pee really bad so I stopped at Yogurt Town and felt bad for using their bathroom without buying anything.
Exhibit B: That same psycho reason carried over to FOUR DIFFERENT STARBUCKS STORES. At all but one of the stores I had just water, but at the last one i had a double short soy vanilla latte (technically vegan, I know, but a lot of sugar + caffeine + liquid estrogen = no bueno para mi. But it was SO worth it.) I also purchased a banana (didnt end up eating it - got smashed in my purse), Two Moms in the Raw Blueberry Granola Bar (the only smart idea of my day), dark chocolate graham crackers, marble pound cake (another “so worth it” moment. seriously … it was quite possibly the most guilt-free thing i ate all day. it was THAT good.), a bag of sweet potato chips, aaaaand I think that about sums up exhibit B.
Exhibit C: Native Foods. Okay I know you southern california vegans know that this place is Le Bomb, but I dropped in just to grab some of that mind-blowing lavender lemonade and a huge chunk of banana bread with chocolate chips.
Exhibit D: This actually took place last night at a Mobil gas station in Corona, but I feel it is most definitely worthy of being on this post. I sauntered into the gas station food mart with 13 dollars in hand. 10 dollars for gas, 3 dollars for a “healthy treat” (who am i kidding? It’s a gas station.) I walked out with a tin of altoids and a bag of chili cheese fritos, which I probably have not had since my senior year of high school (which was…8 years ago! Dang I’m old.) I ate half the bag before I realized that I was enjoying the act of rebellion - the act of eating something “against the law” - more than I was actually enjoying the food itself. I rolled my eyes at myself, closed the bag and put it away. So long, fritos.
Ah, yes. The human in me emerges at last. I realize that I post a lot of pictures of food that is really good for me, that I sincerely enjoy both preparing and eating, but I leave out the in-between mishaps - formerly known as setbacks, currently known as speedbumps on a long and arduous road towards optimal health in my life. I plan on becoming a wee bit more honest here, as none of us are perfect - today being a perfect example of consistent imperfection.
Here are some other random food photos from tonight.
Bought a pineapple at Sprouts today. So good.
Toasted some buckwheat (kasha) and decided to also toast some almonds, and then use the dried figs, currants, pure maple syrup, agave nectar, coconut oil, vanilla extract, sea salt and apricot preserves to make some granola! Then I sprinkled some brown sugar on top and baked them in the oven. Amazing!
Okay so here are the pictures, as promised. Cooking is a lot more fun when there are other people there to enjoy it with you :)
This book….is amazing. I just finished making two different recipes from this for my sister’s birthday dinner tonight and i have to say this cookbook provided the perfect dishes. I made the Bulgur Pilaf with Dried Fruits, and I made the Persian Tomato and Cucumber Salad. Pictures to come …
